President Trump is endorsing legislation to limit legal immigration. Speaking at the White House this morning, Trump called it the most significant reform of the U.S. immigration system in half a century. The President was joined by the two Republican senators who are co-sponsoring the bill, Georgia's David Perdue and Tom Cotton from Arkansas.
Trump says the measure would make the system more "merit based" for skilled English speakers. He says it would keep out people who will just end up collecting welfare. He provided no information to support his statement.
His involvement puts him at the center of efforts to overhaul the system of legal immigration.
Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration a hallmark of his administration.
