I had the pleasure of meeting her when I was hosting Fort Lauderdale pride last year and her positivity and determination to stand up and raise her voice for other transgender youth and the LGBTQ Community as a whole really left a great impression on me.
Jazz Jennings is 17 years old. You might know her as the star of TLC’s “I Am Jazz” and for her work as an LGBTQ activist. Well, after a long wait she was finally able to get her gender confirmation surgery. Jazz was born male and has identified as a female from a very young age. Soon after her surgery she took to her Instagram to let her fans know she was “doing great.”
Before her surgery she shared her excitement about this long awaited moment on her YouTube channel telling her fans “ it’s crazy to me. I’m going to have new genitalia.” She also shared that the medication given to her to suppress the growth of her genitalia was given so early that doctors worried they would not have enough tissue for the surgery. To remedy this situation jazz says her doctors extracted part of the lining of her peritoneum.
