Fashionista, was one of the first to post about this now viral sweatshirt from Revolve.
To give you the backstory, there are five sweatshirts that were meant to empower women with negative messages reportedly told to models and actresses. For example, Lena Dunham ("Horrible Result of Modern Feminism"), Suki Waterhouse ("If you translated a bum onto her face, she'd have a better face") and Cara Delevingne ("Too boney to be boned"). In tiny font under the quotes, the sweatshirts read, "As said to" with an Instagram handle, which leads us to believe these were pulled directly from the comments of the people credited.
The problem is that when seen alone, without the background story, and especially when worn by a thin model, the sweatshirt with the message "Being fat is not beautiful. It's an excuse" can be easily seen as fat shaming. The shirt went up on Revolve's website on Wednesday for a whopping $168 but has since been removed.
Needless to say, they didn't take the shirt down fast enough and Twitter and Instagram lost it when the image became viral. Many are commenting that the store doesn't even sell for plus sized women, not having a single item available in their Plus Size section of the shirt's page, as screen shot below.
Tess Holiday, plus-size model recently featured on the Cosmo UK cover, making history, also called out Revolve for being “a mess.” She said “They have a huge following that’s mostly young women and they are perpetuating the toxic idea that our worth is tied into our size... They must have never seen me, because I’m fat and beautiful.”
