As if we needed any extra reasons to love Dwyane Wade! During a recent interview on The Ellen DeGeneres show wade opened up about his daughter’s decision to come out as transgender.
He said:"Zion, born as a boy, came home and said, ‘Hey, so I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward I am ready to live my truth. I want to be referenced as ‘she' and ‘her.' I would love for you guys to call me Zaya.'” Wade went on to say he replied by saying‘You are our leader. You are our leader and this is our opportunity to allow you to be a voice.’”
It’s evident that parenting is a priority for the retired NBA star and his wife. He told Ellen, “Me and my wife, my wife Gabrielle Union...we are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community and we're proud allies as well," he told host Ellen DeGeneres. "We take our roles and responsibility as parents very seriously."
Makes me so happy to hear this type of acceptance from parents of LGBTQ children. It also makes me incredibly happy to hear celebrities with a platform, such as Dwyane Wade and his wife Gabrielle union talking about this so openly and with pride because that’s the type of attitude and parenting that needs to be modeled; love and acceptance should always lead.
I know for a fact the Latino community still has a lot of work to do when it comes to acceptance of LGBTQ children and family members. But the work is definitely being done and the opportunities for communities and families to come together are being made by so many leaders out there.
One of those opportunities is actually happening this Sunday at Gay8, where I’m excited to be be hosting with 939MIA and my sister station TU949. The festival starts at 11a till 10p, it’s free to attend, there will be live entertainment all day long, the whole family and all ages are welcome, it’s going to be a blast.
Performers include Lucy Gray, Son Lokos, Nic N’Taya, and Albita will be closing off the night.
Keep spreading love...
