Florida leads the nation with deadly cases of a rare flesh-eating bacteria.
The Department of Health confirms 11 cases of Vibrio vulnificus and four deaths in the first half of 2025
Scientists say vibrio thrives in warm, brackish water and enters the body though open wounds.
Dr. John Sinnott, USF professor of medicine warns, "Cases usually peak in August when water temperatures are at their warmest, allowing the bacteria to replicate quickly." He advises, "Thoroughly clean any wounds acquired in the water with soap and water, applying triple antibiotic ointment, and monitoring the area closely for signs of infection."
And doctors warn that cases can spike in August as water temperatures rise.
Florida had 82 cases and 19 deaths in 2024--numbers largely impacted by exposure to post-hurricane flooding.
