(Orlando, FL) - Orlando police say a suspect is dead as the result of a police-involved shooting in downtown near UCF.

According to Deputy Chief Chad Ochiuzzo, says police were called to the scene for a roommate dispute when the suspect charged at two officers with a pair of scissors.

"At approximately 3:40 a.m., officers responded to a disturbance between roommates. While talking with the roommates involved in the dispute, a white male in his 40s, who appeared to be sleeping in Luminary Green Park, charged at officers with an edged weapon, later identified as a pair of scissors," according to Ochiuzzo.

He continued, "While charging at officers, the suspect made a slashing motion with the scissors. Officers gave multiple commands for the suspect to drop the weapon. However, the suspect refused to obey their commands and continued to come at the officers. When the suspect failed to comply, he was shot. He died at the scene."

The Orlando police say no officers were injured, and FDLE is investigating. Amelia Street was blocked in both directions near Chatham Avenue for several hours this morning.

According to Deputy Chief Chad Ochiuzzo, "This was a completely unprovoked attack, and the officers had no prior contact with the suspect. We want to be clear, the suspect involved in this shooting was not involved in the initial dispute between roommates.   He explains that "The suspect has a criminal history including burglary with assault and battery, grand theft, and possession of meth."
