Miami, FL - The Miami Dolphins are making significant coaching changes following an underwhelming 2024 season, parting ways with special teams coordinator Danny Crossman and wide receivers coach/pass game specialist Wes Welker, the team announced Friday.
Danny Crossman, a veteran with 32 years of coaching experience—22 of those in the NFL—had led Miami’s special teams unit since 2019.
Before joining the Dolphins, Crossman held similar roles with the Carolina Panthers (2005–2009), Detroit Lions (2010–2012), and Buffalo Bills (2013–2018).
However, Miami’s special teams have consistently ranked near the bottom of the league over the past three seasons and faced numerous penalties throughout the 2024 season.
“I am grateful for Danny’s contributions and dedication to the Dolphins over the course of many seasons, as well as the numerous ways he helped me as a head coach,” Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said in a statement.
Wes Welker, a former 12-year NFL wide receiver and standout with the Dolphins and New England Patriots, joined Miami’s coaching staff in 2022.
In his first two seasons, he helped shape one of the league’s top passing offenses.
However, the Dolphins’ passing game regressed in 2024, dropping to 15th in the league after leading the NFL the previous year.
This decline was particularly evident in star wide receiver Tyreek Hill's performance.
Hill finished the season with 959 receiving yards, his lowest total since 2019 when injuries limited him to 860 yards with the Kansas City Chiefs.
“I also want to thank Wes for his investment here,” McDaniel added. “This was not a decision I came to lightly, but as I have evaluated the season and areas where we must improve, I believe that change is needed and am motivated to do what is best for the team as we move forward.
