A 99-year-old South Dakota grandmother goes skiing for the first time, checking it off of her bucket list just a few weeks before her 100th birthday. Edyth Wame has always wanted to ski, but lifelong disabilities have kept her from doing it. Then last year a family member entered her in a drawing to win a skiing experience with the Black Hills Ski for Light organization, which offers visually impaired and mobility impaired individuals a chance to go skiing.
So last week, Wame got suited up in winter gear on loan from her granddaughter and headed an hour up into the mountains from her home in Rapid City to the Terry Peak ski area. With help from Wame’s family, Ski for Light volunteer Tim Brumbaugh strapped her into a sit-ski, a specialized molded bucket seat mounted to a pair of skis, and then they hit the slopes.
As the pair made their way down the mountain Wame yelled, “Oh, my god. This is unbelievable.” And after the first run asks, “Is it that bumpy all the way? I thought skiing was smooth!” But that didn’t keep her from making a second run. Then after her third run, Wame was ready to call it a day. “I got other things to do,” she says. But she did have a good time and recommends the experience. “This was wonderful,” Wame says with a smile. “I think everybody should do it. Even though it’s real bumpy.”
