A Maryland man goes to the store to pick up some chicken for dinner and ends up winning $100-thousand on a scratch-off lottery game. A wife in Hagerstown sent her husband to the grocery to grab some pre-cooked chicken for a quick dinner. He did as he was told, but before leaving the store, he hit up the store’s self-service lottery vending machine. He put $20 in the machine and got a ticket for the upcoming Mega-Millions drawing and then used the change to grab the first $10 scratch-off he saw.
Later that evening, after their chicken dinner, the man sat down and played his scratch-off. He realized he’d won something, but didn’t immediately calculate how much he’d won. "I thought, at least I won $10 and I'll get my money back," he says. And then he scanned the ticket with the lotto app on his phone and found out he’d won $100-thousand.
"He let out a line of words that our kids are not used to hearing," the man’s wife tells Maryland lotto officials. "They thought he was upset." The family showed up to Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore last week to claim their prize. They tell officials they plan to spend the money on a vacation this summer, to pay down some debt, on home repairs, and maybe a new TV.
