A Florida Highway Patrol Trooper puts herself in harm’s way to stop a reckless driver heading toward runners on the Sunshine Skyway bridge. On Sunday morning, a speeding vehicle passed through multiple barricades meant to keep traffic off the course of the Skyway Charity 10K Bridge Run which involved nearly seven-thousand participants and support staff.
The driver evaded several law enforcement agents before Florida Highway Patrol Master Trooper Toni Schuck used her police cruiser to stop the speeding car. The impact put both Schuck and the driver, later identified as 52-year-old Sarasota resident Kristen Kay Watts, in the hospital. Fortunately, Schuck was soon released and continues to recover at home.
On Monday, the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle Twitter account tweeted their thanks to Schuck. “Yesterday, a drunk driver was heading toward the Skyway 10K route and FHP Trooper Toni Schuck selflessly placed her vehicle directly in the path of the drunk driver - preventing a tragedy,” the post reads. “Thank you for your service, Trooper Schuck. We wish you a speedy recovery.”
- Watts was arrested and charged with several offenses including driving under the influence with serious injury and DUI with property damage.
