A Welsch toddler who doctors believed would never walk after being in a horrific car crash, defies the odds and takes her first steps. In December, 18-month-old Alice Polinska suffered a broken spine when a suspected intoxicated driver crashed head-on into her mother’s car. Alice had to undergo risky surgery and doctors didn’t know if she’d make it and even if she did, they believed she’d likely never walk.
Alice’s parents braced for the worst, but then a miracle happened: Alice made steady improvement in the months after her surgery. “I was so terrified that Alice would be paralyzed when this first happened,” says Alice’s mom Magda Polinksa. “But the physio team came every day, building both my confidence and Alice’s until she was able to sit and even stand again.”
By the end of January, the toddler had progressed enough to be able to leave the intensive care unit. And then, earlier this month, despite all the odds against it ever happening, all of her hard work paid off when Alice took her first steps. Alice’s mom had nothing but praise for the doctors and therapists that have helped Alice overcome her disabilities, saying “We’re so thankful to them all for what they have done.”
