Mental health, substance abuse, re-entry programs... they are all being slashed from Florida prisons.
The reason is to help make up for a $50 million shortfall in its healthcare and pharmaceuticals budgets. Even prison chaplains and librarians will feel the sting for what the Department of Corrections blames on underfunding in the budget the Legislature approved in March.
The department says the shortfalls come on top of $24.9 million in operational cuts in the budget that takes effect July 1.
